About us
Founded in 1962, Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) is a fully accredited international day school located in western New Providence.
WE ARE THE ONLY SCHOOL in The Bahamas to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes from the earliest years through Grade 12. Upon graduation, LCIS students move on to top colleges and universities around the world. As a community-based school with a global focus, we have always served local and international families. students come first
Our non-profit school spends over 84% of tuition dollars on teaching and learning each year.
Experience comes with age and with 60 years of history, LCIS has a trusted record of growth and success. Under the governance of our Board of Directors, our non-profit school spends over 84% of tuition dollars, or about $7m dollars, on teaching and learning each year. With our strategic focus on excellent teaching, innovative curriculum and programmes and a stimulating environment, students are sure to thrive.
Transformative Learning Experiences
Numerous co-curricular, sporting and travel experiences enrich students’ personal development.
With over 50 free Co-curriculars, students can explore interests from sailing to steel band, coding to kayaking, and gymnastics to Junkanoo. Beginning in Grade 5, annual off-island trips extend the curriculum. All Grade 9 students complete the Bronze Certification for the Governor General’s Youth Awards (Duke of Edinburgh’s Award). Secondary students have additional opportunities to travel and learn, whether it is to Montréal for Model United Nations, Jamaica for a football tournament or Costa Rica for a Spanish language exchange trip. LCIS is also a member of BAISS and CISA, which provide opportunities for local and international athletic competition.
Outstanding Student Results
Our students meet or exceed the norms on international and national exams.
The quality of an LCIS education is proven as our students meet or exceed the international or national norms on exams such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years & Diploma Exams, PSAT, SAT and BGCSE. Through additional standardised exams, such as MAP Growth Assessments, parents can compare their child’s growth to past performance and global standards.
University Placement
IB students get more acceptances and scholarships to university than their peers.
Being at an International Baccalaureate (IB) school helps students build knowledge and skills that result in more acceptances and scholarships for university. Since 2010, our graduates have earned over $10.9m in scholarships and are studying or working in 24 countries on 6 continents. Our dedicated University and Career Counsellor works with every student to find the best fit and most students are accepted into their first-choice school.
Accreditation
LCIS is regularly evaluated by the International Baccalaureate Organisation, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of International Schools.
Not every school undergoes a rigorous external review process. However, LCIS is regularly evaluated by the International Baccalaureate Organisation, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and the Council of International Schools to ensure curriculum, results, staffing and administration operate at the highest international standards. LCIS is proud to be part of an elite group of only 55 schools worldwide to maintain four levels of authorisation by the IB.
Highly Qualified Teachers
Nearly two-thirds of our staff have master's or doctorate degrees.
Excellent education starts with excellent teachers. 64% of our staff have master's or doctorate degrees and LCIS spends over $100K a year for ongoing professional development. The International Baccalaureate curriculum supports teachers in the design of effective curriculum and assessments. And, with over 900 teachers applying each year for less than 10 vacancies, LCIS continues to hire the best teachers from The Bahamas and around the world.
A Diverse & Inclusive Community
We are proud to be 40% Bahamian and to represent 41 nationalities and 14 languages.
Whether from across the globe or down the road, students from 18 months to 18 years are welcomed and supported at LCIS from their very first day. Our community is proud to be 40% Bahamian and to represent 41 nationalities and 14 languages. We celebrate our diversity and offer curriculum and programmes that develop international mindedness alongside an appreciation of Bahamian culture.
The Best Preparation for Learning and Life
The International Baccalaureate curriculum cultivates problem solvers who can think creatively.
In today’s world, it’s not just what you learn, but how you learn that is important. The International Baccalaureate focuses on cultivating problem solvers who can think creatively. It also develops young people who have compassion and who are not afraid to try to make the world a better place. For students of all ages, our curriculum develops academic and personal skills that will allow a child to be happy and successful in school and life. Art, music, PE and languages are taught regularly from the earliest years.
