Head of School’s Profile

The Lyford Cay International School Board of Directors and Governors is pleased to announce the appointment of Audrius Barzdukas as our next Head of School.

Mr Barzdukas’ selection follows an extensive and rigorous global search process led by our Search Committee and Spencer Stuart, a world-leading executive search and advisory firm.

Mr Barzdukas joins LCIS with a very distinguished background in educational leadership, most recently serving for seven years as the Head of School at the prestigious Poly Prep Country Day School (Nursery-Grade 12) in Brooklyn, New York. Prior to Poly Prep, he spent 13 years at the world-renowned Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, California, consistently ranked as one of the Top 5 private schools in the United States and the Number 1 private school in California, where he spent several years as Head of the Upper School.

During his tenure at Poly Prep, Mr Barzdukas was instrumental in driving academic excellence, fostering a supportive and inclusive community, and leading innovative programmes that, year after year, set higher standards and results for the school. The school's student outcomes and administrative achievements under his tenure were extraordinary and speak for themselves. He brings a wealth of experience and a visionary approach to LCIS that aligns perfectly with our mission of “Educating the Leaders of Tomorrow.”

Mr Barzdukas is known for his commitment to a holistic education, emphasising not only academic achievement but also each student's artistic and athletic development. He aims to create a culture within which our students will be encouraged to achieve ambitious goals. As a result of his early professional experience, spending 10 years with USA Swimming and the US Olympic Committee, he is very well qualified to build teams and support students in their development.

Mr. Simon Townend became Chair of the LCIS Board of Directors in 2021 after many years as a Board member.  He became Co-Chair in 2023. Both of his children are alumni of LCIS, and he himself attended the school for a few years in the 1970s. Professionally, he is the Country Managing Partner for KPMG in The Bahamas and Head of Advisory for KPMG in The Bahamas, Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands.  Mr Townend is also on the Board of the KPMG Islands Group.  He formerly also served for many years on the Council of the Bahamas National Trust.

Mrs. Lauren Symonette became Co-Chair of the LCIS Board of Directors in 2023 after serving on the Board since 2021. She also serves as Chair of the Education & Wellness Committee. She and her husband Cameron have two children at LCIS, Elizabeth and Roland. Mrs Symonette currently runs HCap Consulting Ltd., a Human Resources consulting business. She has spent the majority of her career in Human Resources, working within the Financial and Hospitality industries, most recently serving as Director of Benefits & Development at Baha Mar.

LCIS is a non-profit school governed by the Board of Directors & Governors, which oversees the school’s institutional affairs, governance, finances and fundraising, and delegates responsibility for the day-to-day administration, programming and policies to the Head of School.

The Board works closely with the Head of School and participates in periodic strategic planning for the growth and evolution of the School.

Board members and governors are appointed for their diverse range of talents, skill sets, perspectives, experience, demographics and active school engagement, all of which support the School in fulfilling its promise and achieving its mission.

Board members and governors serve on several working committees: Finance, Advancement, Buildings and Grounds, Education & Wellness, Strategic Planning and Nominating. The committee and subcommittee work is supported by staff and other parent or community volunteers.

Accreditations

Accreditations provide international standards for curriculum and administration as well as the structure for LCIS to undergo rigorous internal and external evaluations every few years.

LCIS is an IB World School, fully authorised to offer four IB programmes. The school also is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). LCIS was certified under the UN Green Flag Programme as an Eco School in 2014.
